Can you drink diet caffeine free soda while pregnant?

Shel

I just found out I am pregnant on Friday!! (haven't been to the doctor yet) This is a question I plan to ask during my first visit....just wondering what other people have been told.
I LOVE Diet Coke and drank a lot of it before TTC and then switched to the caffeine free version. I will cut on back this until I meet with my doctor. Thanks :)

Answer
I drink regular diet soda with caffeine! Up to 300mg of caffeine a day is fine, and a diet soda has about 20mg of caffeine. There are even studies showing moderate amounts of caffeine as being beneficial to the developing fetus.

I want to make sure you understand this. Up to the caffeine equavalent of 15 cans of soda a day is just fine, and perhaps beneficial to the developing fetus. But keep in mind a cup of coffee is 200mg of caffeine, equal to 10 cans of diet soda. So coffee caffeine you do need to limit.

There are some studies showing a problem with fake sugars and health defects, but the evidence to support it is really really weak. It seems that aspartame in moderation is just fine during pregnancy.

Avoid saccharine (not used much anymore anyway though really) and stick to splenda and aspartame. Splenda (sucralose) appears not to have any negative health effects so far, but seeing as though it is still only 20 years old, they may find more problems with it as time goes on.

Due to the risk of gestational diabetes I wouldn't recommend substituting regular soda for diet.

Doctor's don't really want to see you until 8 weeks, so it is best to get info off the internet now.

Most important right now - folic acid (80mg a day), and avoiding alcohol. Also, now is not the time to get a cat, or to start changing litter boxes if you haven't already been doing it for years.

Is it safe to diet while pregnant?

Is it safe to diet while pregnant to avoid gaining too much weight?
Not a drastic diet, just a healthier diet with less calories than currently consuming

Answer
It isn't good to "diet" while pregnant if you mean dieting to lose weight. It is, however, ok to go on a "healthy eating" diet, meaning it's absolutely wonderful to start eating more healthy while you are pregnant. The best thing to do is to talk to your doctor or midwife about the best thing to eat while you are pregnant. She or he can advise you what is best to give you and your baby while you are pregnant.
