get pregnant with twins diet image
Mommy to 2
My great grandma had 4 sets of unidentical twins (Not all of them survived and I believe that she also had 4 other singleton births). I have heard that it is hereditary, but that it skips generations??? So my question is how does it skip generations, and does it make me more likely to get pregnant with twins at some point?
Answer
Factors that influence the occurrence of fraternal twins (in no particular order):
* Age: Older mothers (over 35) have a higher chance of releasing more than one egg.
* Family history of fraternal twins: See more below.
* Race: Asians have the lowest incidence of twins, some African countries have the highest rates of twins in the world.
* Diet: Increased consumption of yams or dairy could possibly be linked to higher instances of twins.
* Fertility assistance: Using fertility drugs or treatments (like Clomid or IVF) can increase your chance of having multiples.
* Being a twin: If you are a fraternal twin your chance of having twins increases dramatically.
* Having a set of fraternal twins: Once you have twins your chances increase to about 1 in 12 to have another set. (I better watch out!)
* Height/weight: Overweight or tall women have higher rates of twins.
* Number of pregnancies: The more times you have been pregnant the higher your chances of conceiving twins. You are least likely to have twins in your first pregnancy naturally.
* Being on the pill: If you get pregnant while taking the birth control pill you are more likely to have multiples. Taking the pill improperly and messing with hormones can cause hyperovulation. (Don't panic though, when taken properly the pill is thought to be 99.9% effective for preventing pregnancy.)
* Breastfeeding: Some research shows that getting pregnant while breastfeeding can increase your chance of having twins.
More about the familial history:
* Identical twins are in no way hereditary. It is completely by chance that an egg will split causing two babies instead of one. The percentage of identical twins born is actually universally the same. Meaning that no matter what race or ethnicity you are, that you have the same chance of having a set of identical twins as anyone else. In other words you have a 3 in 1000 chance of having identical twins no matter who you are.
* Fraternal twins are the only kind of twins that can possibly be caused by inherited traits. The ability to release more than one egg during a given cycle is passed down within families. Though the male can carry the gene and pass it on to his offspring he doesn't have any influence on whether or not he will have twin offspring himself. Which is why sometimes twins can appear to skip generations in families. Rates of fraternal twins vary greatly between populations because of these reasons.
So in the case of twins running in families--it's only influential if there are twins on the woman's side and if the twins are fraternal.
In total there are alot of factors that can influence your chances of having twins. However, there is never a guarantee of having twins no matter which group of factors you may possess.

Is there a way to intentionally have twins without invitro and all that?

Is there a way to get pregnant with twins naturally.
It is a discussion we are having. Please answer the question at hand.
Answer
There are no guarantees for twins whether you do IVF or go natural . . but certain things increase your risk for twins - being overweight, being over 35, having a family history of fraternal twins on the mom's side all increase your chances.
Some studies also show that a diet with a high amount of dairy and yams could put you at an increased risk.
Good luck!
