Pregnant with PCOS?

ME

Is it possible to get pregnant through IUI with PCOS? I am undiagnosed but am 99% sure its what it is. I have almost every symptom, and my cousin was recently diagnosed and her doctor said that it may be genetic. Her and her husband are having a hard time having a baby though. They've been trying for about a year. I am 18 right now but plan to get pregnant around 22 or 23. Point being is it possible to get pregnant with it?

Answer
It is possible to get pregnant even if you have PCOS. The important thing to know is the correct treatment for it. The best treatment is a low carb diet, exercise, combined with an insulin sensitizing drug, such as metformin. A few important facts to know:

1. The main cause of PCOS is insulin resistance (IR). Many women "pass" the blood test that determines IR, but still respond positively from metformin.

2. You should be treating your PCOS even if you are not trying to get pregnant. There are serious health risks that are elevated when PCOS is untreated (i.e. diabetes, high blood pressure, blood clots, certain cancers, etc). If the PCOS is treated continuously, those risks go back down.

3. It is VERY important to be on the correct dose of metformin. You wont see any improvements in your symptoms if you are not on a high enough dose (and it usually takes a few months on that dose before you see improvements).

I recommend seeing a reproductive endocrinologist. They are the most knowledgeable about PCOS. I also highly recommend visiting a message board geared toward women with PCOS. There is a great one at www.ivillage.com.

Answer
i have pcos and was prescribed metformin also. I was taking 2000 mg per day and i was able to have a baby just 3 months after starting the metformin. I was prescribed the metformin simply for the purpose of getting pregnant. So yes it is possible to be pregnant with pcos. The Metformin itself made me feel very bad, I was very tired and ached all over and was throwing up for 2 weeks after starting it. I was taking the pill with lunch and dinner ...only 6 hours apart.... bad idea... you need to take it 12 hours apart! so if you take it at 8 am take the second pill at 8 pm. Its hard to say if what you are experiencing is a pregnancy symptom or metformin symptom. It sounds to me like its the Metformin. But if you have been having unprotected sex you could be pregnant also! all you can do is wait to take a test. If you are pregnant, make sure you stay on your metformin until you are 12 weeks otherwise you have a 50 % chance of miscarraige due to the pcos hormone ifficiencies.
