What can I do to get me ready for basketball?

QDER

I want to try out for my JV high school basketball team. Last year, in middle school I made first cut and then missed last cut. :/ There were two cuts. And I believe 25/60 kids made first cut.

I admit I am a good bench player not a starter. I am 5'10 and I'm 15. I have nice post up moves, a nice mid-range shot, I make around 30% of the 3's I shoot and I have alright handles. I have a nice shot overall and want to know what I can do to improve my chances of making the team. Any drills, exercises?
Ohhh, and I'm quick, fast, jump pretty high (touch the back of the rim), and have great defense (my best skill). I think I would play SF.

Answer
Well if you played in high school do this

Get some stats from a website for your position from players in nba know from high school then compare them to yours

example

I am going to play shootng gaurd if I make it to NBA and I want to be really good lets compare me to someone really good like kobe.

30.8 points, 12 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 4.0 steals, 3.8 blocked shots per game

got from http://www.addinternet.com.ar/kobeeng.ht...

I have 26.5 ppg, 16 rebounds, 5 assists, 6 steals, 2.5 blocks, so based on these stats I can prolly make it to a college team.

Then once you get to college and play do the same thing.

All I did to find the stats were go on google.com and type "(Players name) high school stats" then I searched a little for what I was looking for.

Now you might be rusty so join a league at a park, then get your stats and do that above, make sure your amazing before you even think about getting to nba

Also europe is a lot easier to get into, they sometimes have tryous in america, just google any of your questions, any of them.

defense is a big part of the game, so here are some training tips.

To work on your defense do defensive slides, this is very good and you don't need a lot of space to do it, this sounds a little much but if you have a room that is like 10 feet from wall to wall, defensive slide from one end to another 50 times for a week, then 60, all the way until you get to 100, then you do 100 a day every week.

Another gigantic part of defense is jumping, If you are playing against a team that is on average a foot taller than you, the only way you can stop them from dropping the ball in the basket is defense, and youcan't play defense if they shoot over you so you gotta jump.

To jump high do 50 calf raises a day and 50 squats a day, it will improve your jumping. when that gets easy put some weights in your hands and do them. When you get to jumping high, you can smack anyone dumb enough to try shooting on you.

Another big thing is agility, a lot of people try to trick you by leaving the ball out and when you go for it, they go the other way, now I have great agility so when people try that on me I snag that like stealing candy from a baby. For agility take some tennis balls and go up by a wall, now throw one ball agianst the wall one way, and another ball on the other side, then grab the ball before it hits the ground and throw it back, it sounds easy but when your throwing one, and grabbing the other it can get confusing.

And speed is another big part, if your not fast and you stick tight d, they will go around you, so just gain some speed.

On defense always stay low, cuz you can move quick and also keep your arms out, so when they dribble around you can slide with the and maybe steal the ball.

I hope this helps and if it dosn't

and do this drill for shooting

1. Stand 3 feet away from basket.
2. do beef in order
2.a. Balance, make feet shoulder width apart and make sure you feel balanced
2.b. Elbow, make an L shape with you elbow, and hold ball like you are going to shoot, remember to put your ring finger and your index finger (not middle, index finger) on the seams of the ball to get the most rotation.
2.c. Eyes look at the basket, vision the ball going right over the basket and shoot the ball, just so it goes over the front of the rim.
2.d. Follow through, keep your arm in the air and wrist bent until the ball hits the floor.
3. Do this for about 20 min before every game, practice etc., every time you make 10 in a row take a step back, if you miss even once, go back to the beginning.

The point of this drill is to practice perfect, perfect, perfect form. I don;t know what you do, but if you go in there shooting from the free throw line and trying to make 3's right away, you will have an off day, now sure it's normal to have an off few days like your having, but if you practice this drill before, you will never have an off day, I guarantee.

well for dribbleing do this
Take 2 balls and dribble with them, AT THE SAME TIME. Then walk with the 2 balls once you get used to being stationary. Then start running while you dribble with 2 balls, then add these moves in order after you master one move to the other, crossover(cross both balls over from each hand to other) through legs(put both balls between legs), behind back, one high one low, one fast pace and one at slow pace. after you master all of these do these drills with one ball.

Run dribbling and switching hands after every dribble. Then go between your legs, then behind back , through opponents legs. And one thing that held me back from dribbling good was not doing these moves in fun games, i wud be scared ppl wud laugh if i messed up, but then i didn't care and got better that way, and watch the and 1 t.v. show, the have awsome dribbleing moves. and remember the are quick explosive moves, if you not fast enough, you will get the ball stolen, good luck.

I want to play basket ball but my parents say no?

Q. I'm in sixth grade
I'm pretty good in gym and on the weekends with my friends I asked my mom she said try out for the school next year I don't want to embarrass my self in front of the kids who play travel or bin playing for a while my brother plays two sports and I only play travel soccer I just want to try inter mural basket ball thanks so much
I love playing and my friends say its fun please help I would love to practice and get better
I practice on the three foot baby one In our basement

Answer
Honestly, practicing in the gym is nothing like playing real basketball. There's no pressure on you and nobody is defending you while you shoot or dribble. Also, it doesn't matter if you practice on a 3 foot hoop because real hoops are 10 feet tall. Big difference. Go to an actual gym to practice shooting around. If you want to play basketball and make the team and you have never played before you will need to do a couple things:

1. Have thick skin (don't be too sensitive or get your feelings hurt easily). If you don't make the team there's always next year and the year after that. There's nothing worse than crying or getting sad, especially in front of your teammates and coach. You need to be mentally tough. If the other kids on the team have had more experience than you, they will probably be better but that doesn't mean anything and don't let it get you down because if you make the team and keep practicing you will be as good as them. Also, you need to be physically tough because basketball is a contact sport and you will get roughed up. You might get elbowed in the face, pushed, smacked, and you will get TONS of floor burns and bruises. Don't be afraid to aggressive and dive for loose balls and grab quick rebounds.

2. Practice your fundamentals. (Good ball control, shooting form, free throws, elbow shots, layups, etc. Don't try to show off and do some fancy move because coaches don't care about that and most don't like it.) You can never have too much practice of fundamentals. Coaches will want a player who has SOLID fundamentals.

3. Get in shape. Start running a lot and get into pretty good shape because there is nothing worse than being the last kid to finish suicides or be too tired to keep up with fast-paced drills.

4. Familiarize yourself with basketball terms so you won't be lost when the coach is rushing to explain something.
For example:
-Help side
-On the line, up the line
-Rebound
-Point Guard
-Guard
-Post
-Man to man defense
-3, 2 zone defense
-2, 3 zone defense
-Box out
-Assist
-V-cut
-L-cut
-Paint
-Foul
-Personal Foul
-Technical Foul
-Loose ball Foul (Over the back)
-Over and back
-Travel
-Double dribble
-3 second violation
-Out of bounds
-Steal
-Turnover
-Trap
-Fade
-Fastbreak
-Backdoor
-Cherry pick
-Screen/pick
-Pick and roll
-Give and go
There are lots more but because you're in 6th grade you will probably see these the most. (Sorry if you already knew the terms but I didn't know how much you knew about basketball because you said you never played before)

Anyway, it doesn't matter if you don;t have experience. I'm in 8th grade and it was my very first year and I made the team. I don't know what you mean by intramural but try out for school. Good luck and if you have anymore questions about basketball I can help you out. (:

I had the same problem as u once when i too was in 6th grad ewith me being in 8th grade now. Ok 1st thing 1st if you shot is off then practice makes perfect i mean sure i was the talles player in my team but back then i was the slow C wo couldnt make any jump shots. How do I loose baby fat and get back into shape fast?

Melissa O

I have been on maternity leave for 6 months due to complications. I am suppose to be back to work in 6 weeks now that I have had my baby. I work in a pretty physical unit as a nurses aide for dementia patients. I want to have lost as much weight as do-able and be in shape too, any suggestions?

Answer
1.Set goals. You'll be better able to make a realistic weight loss plan if you know how much weight you want to lose.

2.Identify your weaknesses. Are you a bread fiend? Do you have dessert after every meal and every snack? Is McDonald's your second home? Find the weakness and throttle it. It does not own you, you are stronger and cooler than to allow some silly little craving to knock you off your path.

3.Throw away anything you know is tempting. Those cinnamon buns with 500 calories each? Gone. The ramen noodles in your cabinet? Gone. The problem is that this is not always feasible. Often times we are not the only ones in our homes and therefore the call of the food must be withstood. In this case, out of sight truly is out of mind. Put unhealthy, unfilling foods in a drawer or in a cabinet that you rarely use. Put them all together to make a particularly unappetizing sight. Don't place them all in a decorative basket out on the counter. Place them in a drawer. A drawer heaping with pastries rarely looks like anything but a drawer of fat.

4.Eat less, but eat more often. If possible, eat 4-5 meals a day. This helps your metabolism and blood sugar to stay level as well. This does require a change in your schedule. Eat less within 6 hours of your bed time. You're less likely to burn the calories closer to your bed time. It's fine to eat a large breakfast and lunch because your body will be working on burning those calories for the whole day. Large dinners are likely to go unburned and converted into fat.

5.Do not skip breakfast. If you don't have time to prepare breakfast, buy healthy breakfast bars or those smoothies on the go. It is important to eat breakfast to jump start your metabolism and give you energy for the day. Otherwise you will probably end up falling back on unhealthy foods during the day. Yogurt is also known to boost your metabolism.

6.Eat healthy snacks when you feel hungry between meal times. Healthy snacks would be things high in fiber, fruits and vegetables. Avoid high sugar and high calorie snacks. This will help you get nutrients as well as help lower your appetite so you won't overeat during meals.

7.Increase your fiber intake. Fiber acts as negative calories. It's also filling and healthy for your digestive system. Make it a part of every meal.

8.Eat slowly and chew more. Take time to enjoy your meals. This will help you to finish at the same time as others, and you'll not be tempted by a second helping. Also, chewing more will ensure you get the most out of all the food and it will be digested faster. The more you chew, the more your appetite will be satiated.

9.Drink more water every day. Stay hydrated. While you don't need 8 cups of water a day to stay hydrated, it'll make sure you're hydrated as well as cut down on your hunger levels and force you to get a little bit more exercise (trips to the sink, water cooler, water fountain, and bathroom). If you're a heavy soda drinker, permit yourself to only one diet soda per day, maximum. Just one extra soda each day can add 15 pounds. Recently, fizzy drinks, even diet ones, have been said to slow down metabolism.

10.Increase physical activity. There are two ways to reduce net caloric intake: 1) reduce the number of calories in your diet and 2) Increase the number of calories that you burn in your daily activities. Both approaches are usually necessary and healthful and both are effective in losing weight. You can pick and choose which exercise you want to do, depending on your fitness level and drive. For example: walking, jogging, using the stair stepper, using cross training machines, swimming, tennis, and basketball. Weight training (and resistance training) can help reshape your body. The more muscle you have the higher your metabolism will be.

11.Find active friends. Find people that will drag you out to do more active things. It doesn't have to be much, but any exercise even walking around the mall is better than none.

12.Don't get discouraged. After one or two weeks of initial weight loss, it is quite common for your metabolism to slow down as it adjusts to the new calorie count. Stay on course and you'll see results. In some cases, the scale will tell you your weight is barely changing, but you may be gaining muscle weight while losing fat weight. Also make sure to weigh yourself first thing in the morning to try to avoid the fluctuations in weight due to water.

13.Take all advice with a grain of salt. Everyone is going to have some tidbit of information for you. What worked for them might not work for you. Take it all in stride and work with what is getting results for you. Trying to do everything everyone says will only cause overload.

14.Eat more protein. If you choose to go this route, do not cut out all carbs. If you do so, as soon as you start eating carbs again you will regain your weight back. Instead of eating stand alone pasta, throw some meatballs or chicken in. Eat some beans, they are high in protein and very healthy for you. Increase the ammount of protein, but not by too much. The more protein you take in, the more water you should drink as well.

15.Eat less calories. The average woman should eat around 2,000 calories a day and the average male 2,500. There's many ways to reduce the calories you intake. Try not to eat frozen dinners, pizza, or from fast food joints. There's also certain drinks, such as Green Tea that are calorie reducers. Lettuce is another calorie reducer, but be careful because dressing tends to have the calories. Low fat/light vinnegette, balsomic vineger, red wine and vineger are pretty healthy dressings, but do not load it on

What should I get my sister for Christmas? Currently she is battling cancer?

baby making baskets basketball image

Gabriella

Hi,
So, I'm eighteen and work full time and am looking for something to buy my beautiful amazing sister who is currently battling breast cancer. I actually need to get her more then one gift because her birthday is Friday as well. I really love my sister and she is the most amazing person I've ever met. She's been there for me through my struggles with my eating disorder, depression, bipolar disoreder and self harm issues. She's the main reason why I battle recovery everyday. Her strength to battle cancer gives me strength to battle my battle. My sister is basically my mother. My real mother wasnt a good mother. My sister is 24 this Friday. She just had a beautiful baby girl in September. She owns and manages her own spa place. She used to cheerlead. She loves watching basketball with her husband whom is her high school sweetheart. She's into girly stuff. She scrap books. She enjoys listening to music. What should I get her for Christmas and her birthday so she knows how much I care for her?

Answer
After Christmas, show her this question. She will not have any doubts about your care for her.

Meanstwhile, however, you can make a time-together package for your sister and her hubs. Get a basket and fill it with munchies -- cookies, microwave popcorn, small candies (M&Ms, etc) and such. Include a fleece throw to cuddle up in. Say this is a go-watch-the-game basket. Include a handmade gift certificate for babysitting. (If your sister would rather, you can go over to their house to babysit your niece in another room while they watch the game.)

For her birthday, give her 3 or 4 gift certificates for you coming over and cooking dinner or doing some cleaning or something like that. These everyday things are often the hardest for someone with an ongoing disease, especially if she's a new mom. If you want, buy a #1Sister necklace or keyring or something to go with the gift certificates.
