Why are so many people having twins? Is it because of a fertility drug of some sort?

Im 20 weeks preg and I have made lots of friends with pregnant women from my childbirth classes I attend! A great number of them are having twins, triplets, and ect. Is there something in the water? Id love to have twins as well. If you have or are pregnant with twins, did you have a fertility drug?

Answer
Twins are definitely more common these days because of fertility treatments, as well as an aging population of women (sometimes older women ovulate irregularly and are more apt to ripen more than one egg).

What fertility drug did you use to get pregnant with Twins? And at what dose? ?

I have polycystic ovary syndrome and I think will be moving onto injectibles. I have had no luck with Clomid.
Iam on metformin 2000mg and am not overweight. Thanks :)

Answer
Well Clomid has a 10-30% chance of producing twins, however clomid doesn't often work on women with PCOS.

Most Dr's use clomid with Gonal-F or another type of injection. You must know, that all RE's (infertility Dr's) consider multiples as a failure. They do whatever they can to avoid multiples. Monitoring your cycles by ultrasound and bloodwork will help the Dr see how many follicles (eggs) you're producing. If you're producing too many too quick, he'll slow the meds down, again trying to avoid the chance of multiples.

Most Dr's won't go ahead with a medicated cycle (meaning, they won't advice you to have intercourse and they most certainly won't do an IUI) if you have more than 2 follicles at once.

Metformin dose is good, its as high as you should go, most Dr's don't go over 1500-2000mg.

You may consider trying Femara. I used it with my last 2 children, got PG within 2-4 months. It requires a much smaller dose, is more successful for women with PCOS and has a LOT less side affects.

Hope this helps!
