Not pregnant myself. Know someone who is and is overdue. Wondering why they aren't getting induced?

They should be induced if they hit 42 weeks pregnant because there is an increased chance at that point that the baby will have a bowel movement in the womb, which is unhealthy and even dangerous. The baby would be breathing and swallowing that from the time of the bowel movement until delivery. If your friend is 42 weeks pregnant and hasn't been induced yet, she needs to talk to her doctor about it immediately to find out why.

He's 42, she's 41. She still has a regular cycle. They are having sex at random a couple times per month on average without using any protection. Both have had children within the last 10 years. How risky is this?

If she is ovulating regularly, there is always the chance of pregnancy. I "easily" became pregnant at 38 and then again at 39..................after trying unsuccessfully for SEVEN YEARS (fertility treatment included) in my late twenties and early thirties. Even now, at 42, I am more regular than I have ever been in my entire life. I was always an irregular cycler, never a diagnosed cause, and now I am 31 or 32 days exactly. Very weird.
If you ....I mean they (teehee)....are not ttc, they should be using birth control at all times. Pregnancy is always a possibility and the risk of genetic defects increases with the woman's age starting at age 35. Over 40, this risk becomes higher each month of having a child with Down's. So, if they are not prepared to be parents, possibly to a disadvantaged child, please tell them to use protection.
